  • Momina Aziz: Parent Governor

My son has attended Burley St Matthias Primary School since 2013 and I have been a parent governor since 2016. I am a member of Pupil Support and Resources Committees.  I have really enjoyed learning about how the school works and ensuring that the views of parents are represented on the governing body. I also work in this school as an EAL Tutor/Lunchtime Assistant.

  • Joe Rossiter: Foundation Governor

I have a passion for education and as a father of two young children, I am committed to having a positive impact on the education of the children of Leeds. I have worked in Higher Education since 2007 and have extensive experience in International operations within a university. My work experience in primary schools includes being a Peripatetic music teacher and Learning Support Assistant, as well as organising summer fayres and other fundraising events. I have been a foundation governor since November 2018.

  • James Barnett: Foundation Governor (incumbent)

I’m married to a primary school teacher and we have three children. I’ve been an ordained minister in the Church of England for 20 years and have a wide range of experience of working with vulnerable adults and children. I have been a governor in 2 other contexts previously. The link between the school and the church is hugely important to all of us at St Matts, and a key part of my job is to encourage the growth of that relationship.

  • ALLIE HOPKINSON: HEADTEACHER

I joined the school in September 2023, and although this is my first headship, I have worked in schools across Leeds and Bradford for nearly 20 years, and in Senior Leadership for 15 of those years. I've always had a passion for inner-city schools, and have lots of experience of Special Educational Needs and Disabilities as a qualified SENCo and previous Assistant Head for Inclusion. I've also spent time working for the Local Authority as a teaching and learning consultant.

  • Hahmiz Butt - Co- Chair of Governors Co-opted Governor

I joined the Burley St Matthias family in 2015 as a co-opted governor and am also the Co-chair of governors. I am a qualified corporate lawyer and passionate about ensuring children receive the highest quality of education.

  • Cllr Hannah Bithell - Co-Chair of Governors Local Authority Governor

I am one of the three city councillors for Kirkstall Ward, I became a governor because I have a passion for education of young people in our area. I am also a parent to 2 young children. As a qualified teacher I have a good understanding of the school environment and school improvements and can therefore provide the necessary challenge to the leadership to help Burley St Matthias deliver the best possible education for our young people.  I was appointed after my election in May 2018 as a local authority governor and am delighted to now be in the Co-Chair role.

  • Gemma Fletcher - Staff Governor

I am the staff Governor and have taught at Burley St Matthias for five years, four of which have been in Y6 and 8 months in Reception class after a year of travelling. I even trained here as a student, so I have been a part of our school community for a long time.  Being a Governor allows me to see our school from another dimension and I enjoy being part of the Teaching and Learning Committee as it's the area that I have the most experience in.

  • Chris Drew - Co-opted Governor

I have been a governor since 2020 and two of my children studied at the school. I live in the local area and know how important the school is to our community. I am a civil servant and also work for a small innovation charity.

  • DENA SARHANG - CO-OPTED GOVERNOR

Currently, I am honored to volunteer as a governor on a teaching and learning committee at Burley St. Matthias C of E Primary School. This decision stems from my eagerness to acquire new and modern skills, particularly as one of my children is still studying in primary school. I aspire to learn, explore, actively contribute to development, formulate future plans, identify challenges, and in collaborate with other committee members.

  • JACOB MILLS - FOUNDATION GOVERNOR

I am currently a foundation governor at Burley St Matthias and have a real passion for high quality education in all settings where children can thrive, feel safe and supported to achieve their best. I am currently a secondary school history teacher with an added remit of leading the Learner Curriculum where students are empowered to become more effective learners. I joined as a governor in 2023.

  • ANDY RONTREE - CO-OPTED GOVERNOR

I’m a local Councillor for Kirkstall Ward, which includes the Burley area, and was delighted to be asked to serve as a governor at Burley St Matthias - the school reminds me of the primary school I went to (many years ago!)  I’ve worked mainly in IT, usually for banks, but have also been involved with lots of community projects in Burley and Kirkstall.  I want to do all I can to help make Burley St Matthias the best school it can possibly be, for all the children who learn here, and for all the staff who work here.
